Palliative And End of Life Care
The quality of a person’s passing is really as important as their quality of life. Many older people who are facing the end of their life begin to come to terms with their mortality and it becomes important to ensure this aspect of their life is positive. For many, ensuring the end of their life is as planned as it can be, taking into account their wishes and choices is very important
At Park View we firmly believe that everyone deserves dignity and respect as they approach and reach the end of their life and we provide sensitive and compassionate end-of-life care for people with an illness where recovery is not expected.
Where you receive end of life care depends on your needs and preferences. At Park View we offer end of life care where you, your significant family and or friends, your GP and our care team will create a care plan for you of a package of care elements to ensure your dignity, needs, wishes and choices are upheld so that we can ensure as far as possible a ‘good death’ by which we mean that the dying person was treated with dignity, compassion and respect by their care and support team and they were kept comfortable in familiar surroundings with people who were important to them close by.
Although palliative care is included in end of life care, you can receive palliative care before you are thought to be in the last year of your life because Palliative Care includess managing the physical aspects of an incurable, or terminal illness, such as cancer, or dementia or another progressive life limiting illness. Palliative care can be provided for years.
Palliative care includes managing any physical symptoms, offering emotional, spiritual and psychological support, support with all activities of daily living such as washing and dressing, support at mealtimes, help with mobility and going to the loo as well as offering support for family members and friends.
End of life care is the term used for the support and care people with life-limiting conditions receive in their last months, weeks and days of their life.
We understand how difficult and emotional these situations are, which is why we provide respectful pro-active care focussing on providing relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress, and mental stress of that illness. Indivdualised care ensures the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the person, and their family, are considered and met.
